POLITICAL TALKS

These talks aim to provide a platform for the discussion of ideas and challenge members of the Citizens’ Club. The talks are open to students, teachers, University employees and other citizens who wish to discuss themes and issues pertaining to citizen participation in the social and political life of the community. Through the organization of talks in venues decided on by the coordinators of the Clubs yet to form, the goal is to reflect on the core matters that define and condition the functioning of present-day democratic life, new forms of civic association, especially at a time where social, economic and political change happens at a rapid pace, and whose consequences may not be readily apparent to citizens. Because it is essential to arrive at a creative understanding of the realities around us, the sphere in which we act and react, these talks aim to enhance the bonds of conviviality among participants, who obviously feel pressed to understand the world and the society they are a part of, through new approaches to time and space in this globalized society.

As George Steiner advises, “Let’s at least talk to each other.”

These talks seek to encourage a confrontation of ideas and to help find answers to the participants’ questions; knowing full well that it is urgent to find affective and intellectual outlets and an escape to the apparent siege that inevitable catastrophe has laid to our society.
