tornarse_verbo

“Tornar-se verbo” is a multimedia installation by the artist José Manuel Ruiz that deals with the intrinsic paradox of language: its power as a weapon and the impossibility of mastering it, since it always has a surplus. Such excess is also attributed to art, in a Becoming verb that is provoked by the written word and by narration interrupted by noise and contrast. A coitus interruptus that aims to confront the spectator with the complexity that dwells in what we really believe to direct and govern.

ALTAR VASTE

Flowers and liturgy from ceramics by José Manuel Gomes

Funchal Museum of Sacred Art from 21st June

Highlighting the importance of altar vases as elements that value and exalt flowers in the liturgical context, the reading proposed in the new MASF exhibition integrates an important set of contemporary artistic ceramics by sculptor José Manuel Gomes. The work developed points to many paths, one of them being to transcend the traditional liturgical purpose of the vases, making them works of art in themselves.

MUDAS.Madeira Museum of Contemporary Art.

Inaugurated on 9th December 2022, the exhibition is curated by Márcia de Sousa, the museum’s director. It brings together around 300 works from various national, public and private collections, and previously unseen documentation from the Lourdes Castro archive. It is intended as a tribute to the artist’s work, following her career from her departure from Madeira, her passage through Lisbon, Paris and Berlin, to her return to her homeland, where she would eventually die on 8 January 2022.

The exhibition can be visited until the end of the first half of 2023.
